Remote Learning
Remote Education Provision Information for Parents
This information provides clarity about what pupils and parents/carers can expect from remote education when national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.
For details on remote education for individual pupils self-isolating, please see the final section of this document.
The Remote Curriculum
What is taught to pupils at home?
During the first day or two of remote education, pupils may experience a slightly different approach while teachers prepare for longer-term remote teaching.
What to expect on the first day or two of remote learning:
Pupils will have immediate access to learning via Google Classroom. This platform is already familiar as it is used for homework. Teachers will provide a combination of ‘live’ lessons and tasks to complete.
Will the remote curriculum match in-school learning?
We aim to deliver the same curriculum remotely, wherever possible and appropriate. Adjustments may be made for subjects that are challenging to replicate at home, such as PE and Computing.
Daily Expectations for Remote Education
How much time will my child spend on remote learning each day?
- Maths, English, and Phonics: Daily live lessons (1 hour each).
- Foundation Subjects: Additional tasks set daily.
- Guided Reading: Weekly sessions.
Accessing Remote Education
How will my child access online learning?
Pupils will use Google Classroom with their school-provided username and password. Additional resources and useful websites are also shared on the Castledon School website.
What if my child does not have digital or online access at home?
We recognise that some pupils may need support with digital access. The school can provide:
- Laptops
- Internet dongles
- Printed materials, if required
Please contact the school via admin@castledon.org to arrange support.
Teaching Methods
How will my child be taught remotely?
We use a combination of:
- Live teaching via Google Meet, following the usual school timetable.
- Supplementary resources such as Oak National Academy lessons, BBC Bitesize, and teacher-recorded videos.
- Access to trusted websites and materials (e.g., PowerPoints, worksheets).
Engagement and Feedback
What are the expectations for pupils and parents?
- Pupils should attend live lessons daily or watch recorded sessions and complete all assigned work.
- Parents should establish routines to help children stay ready and focused for lessons.
How will the school monitor engagement and address concerns?
- Teachers will register attendance for live lessons and track submitted work.
- Feedback will be provided on all completed tasks.
- Parents of pupils not engaging will be contacted via phone and email to discuss concerns.
- Well-being calls will continue throughout the remote learning period to support families.
How will work be assessed?
- Verbal feedback will be given during live lessons.
- Submitted work will be marked, and feedback provided.
- Tasks will include varied formats such as quizzes, multiple-choice questions, and written assignments.
Additional Support for Pupils with SEND
We understand that some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) may require additional support to access remote education. To support these pupils:
- Teachers will provide individualised work where needed.
- Regular calls from teachers will ensure families receive guidance and support.
- Printed materials can be provided for pupils struggling to access online resources.
Remote Education for Self-Isolating Pupils
If an individual pupil is self-isolating while the school remains open, the remote education approach will differ. Pupils will receive:
- Online tasks set via Google Classroom.
- Printed workbooks, where necessary.
