Our Curriculum at Castledon School
At Castledon School, our curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, providing a balance of academic learning, life skills and practical experiences. We ensure that all pupils receive a broad, balanced, and engaging education that supports their individual needs, abilities, and aspirations.
Early Years & Primary
Our curriculum begins in Year 1, where pupils learn through a blend of the Key Stage 1 National Curriculum and elements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), ensuring a smooth transition from early learning principles.
In the primary phase, we focus particularly on Literacy, Maths, and Life Skills, using a topic-based approach to provide engaging and meaningful learning experiences. Our curriculum incorporates a multi-sensory approach to learning alongside tailored strategies to support the unique learning needs of each pupil.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
From Year 7 to Year 9, pupils continue to follow the National Curriculum, with a strong emphasis on practical and real-world learning. Lessons remain broad and balanced, covering a range of subjects while developing essential skills for independence. We ensure that learning is accessible, engaging and personalised, incorporating a range of multi-sensory experiences and adapted teaching methods to support each pupil’s progress.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)
At Key Stage 4, pupils follow a vocational and accredited curriculum that aligns with their interests and future aspirations. Learning is increasingly practical and career-focused, with opportunities to:
- Work towards externally accredited qualifications (Entry Level, Functional Skills, and, where appropriate, GCSEs).
- Access vocational pathways linked to their post-16 goals.
- Participate in work-related learning experiences, including external provisions and community-based learning.
- Develop independent living skills, preparing for adulthood and further education.
We strongly believe in learning beyond the classroom, making full use of our on-site facilities and providing off-site learning experiences in the local and wider community. This helps our pupils apply their skills in real-world settings, fostering confidence, independence, and social development.
Cross-Curricular & Enrichment
Throughout the school year, we run cross-curricular themed days designed to enrich learning and enhance pupils’ well-being, personal development, and social skills. These experiences help pupils build confidence, develop problem-solving abilities, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
At Castledon School, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil is taught, encouraged, and challenged to reach their full potential. By providing a curriculum that is structured, flexible, and responsive to individual needs, we empower our pupils to achieve success, both in education and in life beyond school.
